Parents of Michigan school shooting suspect charged with involuntary manslaughter

On the morning of the shooting, a teacher discovered a drawing by Ethan Curmbley depicting a pistol, a bullet, and a person bleeding. According to MacDonald, the words “blood everywhere” and “thoughts won’t stop – help me” were also written on the paper, among other messages.

Ethan Curmbley is being held without bond on twenty counts, including murder.attributed to him:

“It is impossible not to conclude that there is reason to believe that he might harm someone” based on the drawings, MacDonald said.

MacDonald said James and Jennifer Cromble were called to the school, where they were directed to get Ethan on mental health counseling within 48 hours. She said they “resisted” the idea of ‚Äč‚Äčtaking their son home from school and did not search his bag or ask him about the gun.

Authorities said he returned to class and then exited the bathroom with the gun, killing four students and wounding seven others.

When news of an active shooting broke out at the school shortly after 1 p.m., Jennifer Curmbley sent Ethan a text message, urging him, “Don’t do it,” according to prosecutors. A few minutes later, James Crumbley called the police to report the gun was missing and believed his son might be the shooter.

MacDonald said the gun was stored in an open drawer in the parents’ bedroom.

It was not immediately clear if James and Jennifer Curmbley had legal representation.

Parents are rarely charged in connection with school shootings of children. Unlike some states, Michigan does not legally require gun owners to keep their firearms safe from children.

The attack is the latest in a decades-long series of mass shootings at US schools.

Ethan Crumbly has been charged as an adult, even though he is under the age of 18. Under Michigan law, prosecutors have the discretion to charge juveniles as adults when they commit certain violent crimes.

Authorities previously said the shooting was premeditated, citing video recordings and a note they found describing his intent to shoot the students.
